Curriculum

Our curriculum at Bishopswood School reflects our commitment to a learning environment "where every child is a valued individual." Rooted in our school values, we aim to empower every child's unique journey and celebrate their successes. The curriculum is designed with a clear structure focused on three specialised learning pathways:

The Sensory Pathway, Communication Pathway, and Core Pathway ensure each child can access the learning and skills most relevant to their needs. Our overarching goals emphasise communication and independence, equipping students with the skills they need to thrive beyond school.

Intent

Our curriculum's intent centres on supporting the holistic development of each child, promoting skills and knowledge they can apply confidently in their daily lives and future.

Key aspects include:

  • Personalised Learning Experiences:

Each child is placed on one of the three pathways tailored to their individual needs, recognising the value of each student's capabilities and growth potential.

  • Real-World Preparation:

The curriculum emphasises the practical application of skills such as social interactions, independent living, and employability, ensuring students are prepared to engage with and contribute to their communities.

  • Emphasis on Communication and Independence:

All pathways aim to build these core competencies, fostering confidence and a sense of personal agency in each child.

Implementation

The curriculum pathways guide our daily instructional practices and help ensure that students engage with learning that aligns with their abilities:

1. Sensory Pathway:

This pathway is designed for students with profound and multiple learning difficulties. It focuses on sensory and experiential learning, helping students engage actively with their environment through activities encouraging participation, exploration, and basic self-regulation.

2. Communication Pathway

Aimed at students with severe learning difficulties, this pathway introduces foundational academic skills and more independent learning opportunities. Emphasis is placed on expressive and receptive communication, social interactions, and structured learning routines that help build confidence and resilience.

3. Core Pathway

For students with moderate learning difficulties, the Core Pathway adapts elements of the National Curriculum to foster subject-specific skills, critical thinking, and independence. Here, students engage in a broad curriculum that prepares them for real-life challenges, including vocational skills, problem-solving, and community engagement.

Throughout these pathways, we integrate a "Plan, Do, Review" approach, allowing students to progress consistently in a supported, reflective environment.

Impact

The impact of our curriculum is evident in the personal growth, confidence, and life skills our students demonstrate.

Key outcomes include:

Skill Development for Life Beyond School:

By the time students leave Bishopswood, they have gained a portfolio of skills aligned with adulthood preparation, including vocational experience and, where appropriate, qualifications that can support employability.

Confidence in Communication:

Through structured communication and socialisation activities, students become effective communicators, expressing their needs, preferences, and ideas meaningfully.

Increased Independence

Each pathway emphasises independent living skills appropriate to each student's needs, helping them become self-sufficient and prepared to contribute to their communities.

Bishopswood School's curriculum is a dynamic, supportive framework dedicated to "empowering every child's journey and celebrating every success."

Every child can achieve great things and is committed to providing the tools and support needed to make that journey rewarding and enriching.
